An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth, and a woman's reproductive system. Although other doctors can deliver babies, many women see an obstetrician, also called an OB/GYN. Your obstetrician can take care of you throughout your pregnancy and afterwards.
Dr. Grimshaw provides care for both routine pregnancies as well as high risk pregnancies. There are many reasons that a pregnancy may be classified as "high risk" and the risk may be to the baby, the mother, or both. The risk may be small or great depending upon the individual circumstances. High risk pregnancies are followed with a consulting specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Patients with pre-existing health conditions may place them at high risk. For example:
-Hypertension (high blood pressure)
-Diabetes
-Asthma
-Lupus
-Bleeding disorders
-Clotting disorders
-Heart disease
-Renal disease
Patients with a previous complicated pregnancy may be at high risk.
For Example:
Previous Preterm Birth
Previous C-Section
Previous Birth Defect
Previous Stillbirth
Previous Eclampsia
Mothers age less than 16 or over 35 at time of birth are also considered high risk.
In addition many pregnancies begin as routine but become high risk due to new a diagnosis made during the pregnancy.
For Example:
Multiple Gestations (twins, triplets)
Pregnancy Induced Diabetes
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
Abnormal Lab or Ultrasound Finding
